Publishing practice
Edition control is part of the work.
Cereark Press treats publication as a controlled transition from manuscript to edition, format, metadata record and public availability.
Publication identity is fixed
Title, author, imprint, edition statement, rights and release status are controlled as one publication record.
Each product is explicit
Print and digital formats are tracked separately where they are separately distributed or identified.
ISBN discipline
An ISBN is assigned to a specific publication product, not to an idea in the abstract. Numbers are therefore allocated only when the corresponding edition and format are sufficiently defined to justify assignment.
Metadata discipline
Public records should distinguish creation, revision, publication and distribution. A date added to a website is not silently presented as the date a work was created. A forthcoming title is not described as available. A planned format is not treated as released.
Distribution
Retailer, wholesaler, print-on-demand and direct-sales channels are added to the publication record as they become operational. The Press does not present placeholder commerce links as working distribution.
Current programme
Controlled records now being established.
The Press is creating a title register, ISBN register, edition and format register, rights record and distribution record alongside the public catalogue.
